Strength for the Weary Soul in the Wilderness of Unmet Need

“The Lord God has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary” Isaiah 50: 4.

I believe this verse is Isaiah the prophet speaking. But we can apply this principle to the Lord as well. He is able to strengthen the weary with a word too, of course. To read the whole chapter for context, click here.

Strength for the Weary in the Wilderness

It is the word or promises of God that sustain us when we’re in the wilderness of unmet need. Or, when we’re in a situation that seems to be just the opposite of what God promised.

The word or promises of God are our “manna” in the wilderness. They are supposed to strengthen and sustain us until we get to that promise land of physical, natural provision (Exodus 16:13-21).

This is what Jesus meant when He said “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God”Mathew 4: 4.

Our needs are met with bread, with physical, natural provision in the promise land. But until we get there, while we trudge through the wilderness, we will be weary. Weary with the journey, weary with trials, weary with barely enough. And weary with what seems to be the opposite of God’s promise.

He Sustains the Weary with a Word

But it’s here, in the dead, dry, barren wilderness that He sustains the weary with a word.

Until we learn to find our strength or sustenance from the promise of God alone, we will not arrive at our promise land of abundant, natural, physical provision.

We must learn to rejoice in the promise before we will be allowed to rejoice in the fulfillment of it.
