Faith Comes by Hearing: The Tongue Has Power

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits” Proverbs 18: 21.

One reason the tongue has the power of life and death is because faith comes by hearing (Romans 10: 17). If we speak something often enough, either to ourselves or someone else, we will begin to believe it. Either for good or evil, for life or death.

Who We are Is Determined by what We Believe

And whether we realize it or not, our thoughts, attitudes, conduct, emotions and ultimately our character is determined by what we believe.

What we believe is greatly influenced by what we hear. The tongue has the power of life and death then because what we say effects what we believe, what we believe effects what we do, what we do effects who we become. And who we become effects our destiny.

Faith Comes by Hearing for Good or Evil

The tongue has the power of life and death because it produces faith. A child who is repeatedly told he is no good and will not amount to anything will eventually begin to believe it. This belief about himself will be evident in his thoughts, words, actions. And ultimately determine his destiny.

Sooner or later, he will end up living up to the words spoken over him again and again. This principle is also why the word of God changes our lives when we begin to believe it.

We are Transformed by What We Believe

We act on what we believe. And what we repeatedly do becomes who we are. We are transformed by what we believe. And what we hear has a great effect on what we believe.

We are transformed by the renewing of our mind (Romans 12: 2). And our mind is renewed by what we believe. And we believe what we hear.
