How to be Humble: Just Ask Moses
“Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God” Exodus 3: 1.
The Lord quickened the following idea to my heart once when I was in nursing school. I was feeling like I wasn’t smart or witty enough. And I wasn’t getting the respect I thought I deserved from my fellow nursing students.
So, He reminded me of Moses, the humblest man who ever lived.
Moses Flees
After Moses murdered an Egyptian who was mistreating an Israelite in Egypt, he fled for his life from pharaoh to Midian (Exodus 2: 11-15). To read the passage for context, click here.
Shepherds were detestable to the Egyptians. They weren’t even allowed to live in the same cities (Genesis 46: 34).
Moses had grown up as one of the elites in Egypt as a member of pharaoh’s household (Exodus 2: 1-10). So, no doubt, he subscribed to this notion himself. And yet, now we see in this verse that he ended up becoming a shepherd in Midian.
How to be Humble Like Moses
This had to be a very humbling and humiliating experience for him. It must’ve humbled him. And likely was a significant reason ” . . . the man Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth Numbers 12: 3.
Moses was called and destined to a position of great honor.
And “. . . humility comes before honor” Proverbs 18: 12.
