Wisdom’s Narrow Way
“Her [wisdom’s]ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace” Proverbs 3:17.
According to this verse wisdom’s ways are pleasant and peaceful, so why don’t people choose them more often? To read the whole chapter for context, click here.
Because it’s much harder than the foolish way.
It involves resisting temptation, losing your life, and treading the narrow path. “But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it” Mathew 7:14.
This is the narrow path of fearing God. The word “narrow” in this passage is literally a path of affliction, suffering tribulation and trouble. This is according to Strong’s Bible Dictionary.
The destination of this path is the wisdom that brings a peaceful and pleasant life. But you don’t get immediate gratification on this path. And it can be uncomfortable.
Are We There Yet?
Not only that, but it’s contrary to human nature. It requires self-control, self-restraint, and self-denial. And you don’t know how long it’s going to take to get there.
This path requires faith and patience. “We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised” Hebrews 6:12.
The blessed destination demands traveling the hard path.
On the other hand, the cursed destination boasts a deceptively easy and pleasant path.
That’s why so few people walk in the ways of wisdom, even though they are peaceful and pleasant.
A Good Life on the Narrow Way
Basically, in life we are presented with two options. We can have an easy life or a good life. But we can’t have both because they are mutually exclusive.
The path that leads to the pleasant and peaceful life of wisdom is hard.
And the one that leads to misery and turmoil is easy.
Until you reach your destination, of course.
