The Fool and His Many Blows
“A rebuke goes deeper into a man of understanding than a hundred blows into a fool” Proverbs 17: 10.
Provers 17 contrasts the value of peace, wisdom, and character with the destructive nature of foolishness, gossip, and strife. To read the chapter in its entirety, click here.
To be understanding in this verse is to be wise. An understanding or wise person is a mature person.
The Fool is Like Green Fruit
Or using fruit terminology, you could say a mature person is ripe. When a piece of fruit is ripe, it is tender and soft and easily damaged. A fully developed person is the same way. The more mature someone is, the more sensitive and tender and vulnerable he is to being hurt.
Just as you can easily damage a piece of ripe fruit, so too, you can easily hurt someone who is mature. This verse tells us this. A fool is an immature or unripe person. He is hard and insensitive, like a piece of unripe fruit.
Because he’s calloused, a rebuke just doesn’t sink in.
The Upside to Being Easily Wounded
But there’s a definite upside to being fully developed, even though it makes you more vulnerable to being hurt. God doesn’t have to put you through hell and high water to get a message across.
All He has to do is speak a word of correction for you to get the point. This is a beautiful thing, because it means you don’t have to be hit over the head with a 2X4 to learn what God wants you to learn.
In other words, an understanding person can learn the easy way, so he doesn’t have to learn the hard way.
When we’re thick-headed and dense and calloused, even though we receive 100 lashes we still don’t get the message. But an understanding and wise person can be led and redirected by a mere word.
In short, the understanding man learns the easy way, but the fool has to learn the hard way (if at all).
The Circular Nature of Truth
But this principle, like so many truths in the universe, is circular.
A fool has to receive 100 lashes in order to get the message. In other words, he has to endure pain and suffering and heartache in order to grow and mature.
But if he allows himself to be trained by this pain, and accepts it with a good attitude, he will gain understanding or wisdom. And will require less pain to get a message in the future.
In fact, the 100 lashes have a redemptive purpose for the fool, just as the rebuke for the man of understanding. This purpose is to bring him to repentance and cause him to turn from his foolish ways.
And eventually be blessed with the pleasant, peaceful, much easier life of the man of understanding (Proverbs 3: 13-18).
“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” James 1: 2-4.
