The Love of God: The Secret to Stability

“And you murmured in your tents and said, ‘Because the Lord hated us he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to give us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us” Deuteronomy 1: 27. 

In this chapter, Moses encouraged the Israelites to boldly take the Promised Land. Despite the spies returning with abundant fruit and a positive report, the people rebelled, complaining that God hated them.

The Love of God Makes Us Stable

Knowing God loves us is what keeps us stable in trials. The Israelites didn’t even need to believe they were on their way to the promise land, if they just would’ve been convinced He loved them.

Of course, God’s promise was evidence of His love for them. But so were the many miracles He did for them in the wilderness.

If they simply would’ve believed God was for them, and that He was on their side, they would’ve made it to the promise land (Romans 8:31).

They Believed the Wrong Message

But they turned back, and “murmured in their tents”. They believed the message of their circumstances rather than the message of the miracles and the promise.

If we are convinced God loves us, we will be able to endure under trial. We will believe it will work for our good (Romans 8:28), and that it’s an expression of God’s love.

Eve would not have disobeyed God’s command to not eat of the tree of knowledge had she believed God loved her. Instead, she believed God was holding out on her. And withholding something good for no good reason (Genesis 3).
